A Tiny Croatian Town with An Austrian Twist
Opatija is a lively and popular tourist destination which offers sandy beaches and some of the most stunning coastal views in Croatia, evident while strolling along its lovely seaside promenade Lungomare.
The town’s streets and pristine coastline are lined with bright and colourful pastel-coloured buildings, restaurants, bars, cafés and hotels.
If your plan is to go sightseeing, be sure to visit Opatija’s famous picture-postcard statue the Maiden with the Seagull, situated beside Juraj Šporer Art Pavilion. Other must-see sights are the Old City and the 14th-century Abbey of Saint James.
Neighbouring Opatija is Rijeka, Croatia’s historic and principal seaport town and a popular spot for a day trip. Rijeka’s most famous landmarks are the Maritime and History Museum of the Croatian Littoral and the 13th-century Trsat Castle, which offers magnificent city and coastal views.

Underwhelmed.
Underwhelmed. When you look up Opatija you always see pictures of beautiful flowers, especially those in front of the Villa Angiolina. One of the reasons we stayed in Opatija was my wife loves flowers and especially flower gardens. The reality is vastly different from the pictures. We were there in early May 2024 and the weather was cool, but flowers tend to love cool weather. The condition of that postcard style trademark of Opatija was terrible. It is a pleasant town with a nice promenade, but when we were there most restaurants were closed and everything seemed unkempt. Half deserted and still no parking. Possibly they wait for the summer months to tend to things when the town is overrun with tourists and there is really really no place to park.

This place is so nice and beautiful.
This place is so nice and beautiful. And Lungomare walk is something incredible! I wish we had more time to explore the city or simply get lost there. Then visit the museums and admire historical villas, check out nice shops with souvenirs, spent more time just sitting and observing the sea in one of the cozy cafes at the seaside.

It’s a beautiful city with lots of Austrian style influenced buildings. I would not recommend it during the summer because for swimming in the sea it is not the best place to go to, as there are not really nice beaches. But for off season it is very nice.

Tourist Hotspot so most cafés/restaurants/bars are overpriced, often ridiculously so for the level of service. Also too crowded, even in off season. One exception: Pizzeria Roko, go eat there!

Well Opatia is an old tourist town. It does show its age and set of problems like all tourist towns. But still retains its charm and different eras that build it. A wonderful place to walk enjoy coffee on some terrace or a perfect sea food meal. Everything is perfectly organised and the staff is lovely. We had a beautiful room with seaview and enjoyed the restaurant two times, which I can recommend in off-season, when not everything opened yet. If you arrive by car, ask for advice to find the garage, it is a little bit complicated, but if you once found it, it is very convenient to have a parking space there. I just loved it to stay there.

The hosts are kind, helpful, always ready to help, but don't bother you, if you don't want. We have spent one week at the upstairs apartment there, it is fully equipped (AC, washing machine, hair drier, dishwasher, vacuum cleaner, satellite tv), has plenty of place, a nice view to the Sea, large balcony, and beautiful garden. If you visit them, say hello to Grisa, the cutest dog in Opatija!

The apartment is only five minutes walk from a safe swimming area. In fact, we met the owner, Janja, in for her morning swim on one occasion. Car parking is beside the apartment entrance, if required, but must be arranged in advance. Janja and Boris were lovely hosts and made us feel very welcome.BBrianIreland

The staff were very friendly except one we have checked in with. She wad quite inpatient. But the manager was very friendly too. We had to leave a night earlier and she accepted it without any extra fees. The breakfast was 👍 the spa was quite full but the view is stunning 😍 👌
